Time is flying and here we are in 2012! I hope your year has gotten off to a great start. Many people have made New Year’s Resolutions, and I bet a large amount have already broken them. I read the other day an article about focusing on weekly and daily goals rather than yearly goals. I thought this was a good perspective because I think it’s hard to focus on goals for an entire year. We never know what’s going to happen throughout the year and our goals or focus may change.
This year I’ve made one New Year’s Resolution, but I also make daily and weekly goals too. My New Year’s Resolution is to be more positive and optimistic. I sometimes focus on the negative side of things, especially in my own thoughts. I think if I can be more confident and hopeful, it will help make me a happier person. I think it also could rub off on others around me and make them more positive people too. I know this isn’t something that happens overnight, so I use each time I’m negative as a learning experience and reflect on how I could do better.
Something that I’ve always done and will continue to do is to also set daily and weekly goals. These include things such as getting to bed and putting away my school books by a certain hour, relaxing before tests, doing different forms of exercise, and eating a larger variety of foods. I feel sometimes I always find the exact same foods in my shopping cart, so I usually try to buy a different product or piece of produce each week. Additionally, sometimes I find I sit all evening at my desk doing work and my legs are achy before going to bed, so I’ve been trying to move around more at night. I’ve been working on different ideas such as getting up every thirty minutes or standing at my computer from time to time. I make a standing desk by stacking books under my laptop so when I stand it’s still at eye level. I’ve read about desks that are made for people to stand up at and even desks with treadmills. My mom and my brother also have yoga balls as chairs, which I think is a fantastic idea too.
What are your New Year’s Resolutions?
I’ll leave you with a touch of the tropics and some sun for those of us who are in the colder climates. Our family’s Christmas in Florida was warm and relaxing!

Great entry! I miss the sun and sand.
Being more positive is a great goal. I just read an article this weekend about how people are too eager to dismiss ideas even ones of their own. I tried to find the article again but no luck. I don’t have any specific “New Year’s Goal” but I’m determined to be more active this year. But I’m trying to look at if from more of a weekly/day to day schedule, aka I’m exercising 5 times this week opposed to I want to be able to do 1000 push-ups a day by the end of 2012. Which just seems crazy. Saying hey i’m going to be active 5 times a week is much more attainable and then you can set mini goals once you get in the flow of things.
Thank you so much for your comment! I totally agree it’s much easier and a lot more likely to achieve a weekly goal because you never know where life is going to take you and what you’ll be into. You probably wouldn’t have make a New Year’s Resolution to rock climb a 5.9 or 5.10 at the beginning of last year.
Jenny:
I like your ideas – my (hopefully attainable) resolution is to go through all
the exercise stations at the outdoor gym at Waveney three times a week.
I find it very rewarding – makes me feel good inside. Of, course the weather
is a real factor, but we’ll see. Every bit counts, though, doesn’t it? Maybe
by next year I’ll be able to stay on that paddleboard! Gramma
I think that’s a great goal Gramma! You are blessed to have the outdoor gym within walking distance of your house. I wish I had one here. Every bit does count, so even if you don’t make your goal of three times a week every week that’s okay! Some is much better than none and I bet you will notice an improvement.
