Time is flying and here we are in 2012! I hope your year has gotten off to a great start. Many people have made New Year’s Resolutions, and I bet a large amount have already broken them. I read the other day an article about focusing on weekly and daily goals rather than yearly goals. I thought this was a good perspective because I think it’s hard to focus on goals for an entire year. We never know what’s going to happen throughout the year and our goals or focus may change.

This year I’ve made one New Year’s Resolution, but I also make daily and weekly goals too. My New Year’s Resolution is to be more positive and optimistic. I sometimes focus on the negative side of things, especially in my own thoughts. I think if I can be more confident and hopeful, it will help make me a happier person. I think it also could rub off on others around me and make them more positive people too. I know this isn’t something that happens overnight, so I use each time I’m negative as a learning experience and reflect on how I could do better.

Something that I’ve always done and will continue to do is to also set daily and weekly goals. These include things such as getting to bed and putting away my school books by a certain hour, relaxing before tests, doing different forms of exercise, and eating a larger variety of foods. I feel sometimes I always find the exact same foods in my shopping cart, so I usually try to buy a different product or piece of produce each week. Additionally, sometimes I find I sit all evening at my desk doing work and my legs are achy before going to bed, so I’ve been trying to move around more at night. I’ve been working on different ideas such as getting up every thirty minutes or standing at my computer from time to time. I make a standing desk by stacking books under my laptop so when I stand it’s still at eye level. I’ve read about desks that are made for people to stand up at and even desks with treadmills. My mom and my brother also have yoga balls as chairs, which I think is a fantastic idea too.

What are your New Year’s Resolutions?

I’ll leave you with a touch of the tropics and some sun for those of us who are in the colder climates. Our family’s Christmas in Florida was warm and relaxing!

Thanksgiving 2011

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends. I’m so thankful to be where I am and have a home that wasn’t washed away by the flood in August. Nothing beats home sweet home, although I’m incredibly excited for our family trip at Christmas. :-)

A few pics … My cousin made a great snowman yesterday, and we were blessed with a wonderful sunset tonight.

Happy Holidays!

Life is Great

I love these t-shirts from http://www.haveabetterlife.com/.

I just need one that says: Life is great… My family makes it better. :-)

I highly suggest reading the article below – it is very true!! We really can make meals at home for less money than what we can buy at fast food joints.

My favorite part is on page 2: “A similar victory in the food world is symbolized by the stories parents tell me of their kids booing as they drive by McDonald’s.” :-)

Imperfections

“Being happy doesn’t mean that everything is perfect. It means that you’ve decided to look beyond the imperfections.”

Postural Findings

Today I learned how to assess posture. As with everything else I am learning in school, I thoroughly enjoyed it and I can’t wait to become a PT!

I also found out something I never knew about myself: I have bowlegs (genu varum). I was very surprised to discover this, but it definitely explains some of my other faults such as foot pronation and IT band syndrome. I also stand with a wider base of support (feet father apart) than most people. My professor said it’s be genetic, so I’m curious to see who else in my family has it.

Below is a picture I posted a few months ago, and I didn’t realize it at the time, but it really shows how my leg bow and I stand with my feet pretty far apart.

Here is picture showing the different stances people can have. On the left is bowlegs, in the middle is normal, and on the right is knock-kness.

Mission Statement

In one of my classes this summer, the professor recommended we make a mission statement for our life – something we can remember and always keep in mind. Below is what I’ve come up with so far. It’s a draft I can tweak and play with, but it’s a starting point. No matter your age, I suggest you make a mission statement too. It makes a difference.

Life isn’t about keeping score. It’s not about what you look like, how wealthy you are, what grades you get, or how many friends you have.

Life is about what you love and how you feel about yourself. It’s about happiness, compassion, and dedication. Life is about touching others in a way that couldn’t be achieved without your presence.
